Sandy Koufax, Willie Davis, and Ron Fairly photograph

Date1965 September 09
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Los Angeles Dodgers players Sandy Koufax (right), Willie Davis (left), and Ron Fairly (center). Davis and Koufax are shaking hands, and Fairly has his arm around Koufax. The caption on the side of the photograph reads, "Los Angeles, Sept. 9 - Koufax After Perfect Game -- Sandy Koufax (right) of the Dodgers is rushed by teammates as he left the mound at Los Angeles tonight after pitching a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs. At left is Willie Davis, Center is Ron Fairly. 1965." Another caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Bob Hendley lost the game but he gets his name in baseball's record book anyhow. Hendley, 26-year-old native of Macon, Ga., was the losing pitcher Thursday night when Sandy Koufax, the fantastic left-handed hurler for the Dodgers, pitched a perfect game against the Cubs. For seven innings Hendley also had a no-hitter. Then Johnson connected for a harmless double with two out. It was the game's only hit and it goes into the record books as the major league's only game ever played with one hit. Hendley has been in the major leagues since 1961 when he joined the Braves. He won (illegible) games and lost 29 with them before going to San Francisco in a 1963 deal that sent Bob Shaw and Del Crandall to the Giants." According to the caption, this photograph was taken on September 9, 1965.
