John McGraw Batting photograph

Dateapproximately 1922
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of John McGraw captured in profile as he completes his swing on the sideline of the baseball field at the Polo Grounds during the 1922 exhibition game where the New York Giants faced the Chicago White Sox and won 5 to 3. McGraw has a serious expression on his face as he holds the baseball bat in his right hand and his left foot twists in the dirt. McGraw is dressed in the New York Giants road uniform. An unidentified New York Giants player is visible in the background walking behind McGraw. Baseball fans are visible in the stadium seating at the Polo Grounds in the background. Unidentified baseball players are visible in the dugout in the background. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) reads, "With little or no hope held for his recovery John J. McGraw former manager of the New York Giants, was fighting for his life today in the New Rochelle Hospital. Photo shows McGraw batting 'em out before the start of the Giants and Chicago White Sox exhibition game at the Polo Grounds in 1922. Giants won 5 to 3." Based on the newspaper clipping and McGraw's uniform, this photograph was taken in 1922.
