DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel and Mildred Ott captured sitting next to one another on a sofa with their pet dog while reading the newspaper. Both are looking off to the side and are dressed in formal clothing. The caption on the front of the photograph (not shown) states, "Former baseball star and wife injured -- Mel Ott, 49, former star New York Giant outfielder and manager, is shown here with Mrs. Ott in January, 1951, as they read of his election to baseball's Hall of Fame. The couple was injured last night in an automobile accident near Bay St. Louis, Miss. Ott's condition is critical in Gulfport, Miss. Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Ott is less seriously hurt. Driver of other automobile was killed." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) that states, "Mel Ott, 49, former star New York Giants outfielder and manager, is shown with his wife in January, 1951, as they read of his election to baseball's Hall of Fame.
