New York versus Brooklyn ball

DescriptionDarkened leather "lemon peel" style baseball with gold paint covering a majority of the surface. Black painted lettering is still somewhat visible but with many areas of loss, "BROOKLYN___ N__ORK / B_ 18 ------- / FASHION COURSE __ JULY 20TH 185_."

Bio/Historical NoteBall from the very first "all star game" and also the first baseball game to charge admission on July 20, 1858. For 10 cents, spectators could watch the All-New York and All-Brooklyn teams compete at Long Island's Fashion Race Course. The Brooklyn and NYC Fire Departments split the fund-raiser's profit of $71.09. The All-New York beat the All-Brooklyn in this first game and, ultimately, in the best two-out-of-three series, two games to one.
