Tris Speaker and Bucky Harris photograph
Datebetween 1942 and 1947
DescriptionA black-and-white portrait photograph of Tris Speaker and Bucky Harris sitting on a bench, posed for the photograph. Speaker, left, shown from the knees up, wears a long sleeve shirt underneath his Washington Senators uniform. Speaker rests his hands in his lap, with his left hand holding onto his baseball cap and a baseball glove held between his left forearm and side. Facing the camera, smiling, both men look front, establishing eye contact with the camera. Harris, right, shown from the knees up, sits to Speaker's left wearing a vintage style collared baseball uniform with the letter 'N' featured on the front of the jersey. Resting his hands in his lap, Harris clutches his cap with his left hand, while resting his glove on his right leg. Injured, Harris' right index finger is taped and splinted. The shadows present on the subject's faces and the grass in the background indicate that this photograph was captured out of doors, most probably on a baseball field. The perpendicular lines on the surface of the image are not original and indicate where this photograph is to be cropped. Identifiable by the World War II patriotic patch on the right arm of his jersey, Speaker wears a Washington uniform from 1942-1947. This patch, in the form of a shield, features an upper row of white stars against a blue background and a lower section of red and white vertical stripes. This patch was worn by the majority of major league teams in support of the U.S. war effort. Speaker, since retired, wears a uniform contemporaneous to when this photograph was taken, rather than when he played for Washington.
