Edward Andrade USS Whipple shirt

DescriptionWhite shirt with red detailing around the sleeves, shoulders, neck and down the front placket. Front placket extends a quarter of the way down the front of the shirt with one white button near the top neck. Proper right arm has "217" (the number of the ship) embroidered in red stitching. Interior back of neck has "Edw. Andrade USS Whipple W-27" handwritten in black ink. Interior bottom hem of shirt back has "Andrade" stenciled in blue ink.
Bio/Historical NoteUniform shirt worn by catcher, Edward Andrade, a sailor aboard the USS Whipple, a Naval Destroyer assigned to the Asiatic Fleet during World War II. The crew played other military teams when in port as well as the Chinese in Tsingtao and Shanghai. The team's uniforms and equipment were stored in the YMCA in Manila. Most everything was lost during the Japanese bombing of Manila.
