Ted Williams Sits on a Large Chair photograph, 1946

DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Ted Williams in an over sized chair from 1946. The photograph depicts Williams in the mammoth chair his legs daggling over the edge with a large bat in his hands and the giant ball resting on the chair beside him. The giant bat, the "Ted Williams Special," leans against the corner of the chair. Chair inscribed "Gardner, Mass. 1785" and with the marker's mark "Made by Heywood and Wakefield Co." A smaller chair of the the same design rests in front of him in the foreground. The arm of Massachusetts governor Maurice J. Tobin can be seen on the leg of the large chair. The over sized bats and ball were given to Williams as part of a larger presentation to the team made between games of a double header against the Cleveland Indians. A group of fans known as the "Royal Red Sox Rooters" from Gardner, Massachusetts presented Red Sox players with a variety of gifts. Because the principle industry of the town of Gardner was furniture manufacture, each of the Red Sox players and coaches received a normal sized chair. Ted Williams was singled out for special honor and the giant gifts.
