Pete Rose Recording his 4,192nd Hit photograph
Date1985 September 11
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Pete Rose in a Cincinnati Reds home uniform, recording his 4,192nd career hit on September 11, 1985. Taken from a location behind the pitchers mound (perhaps from center field), the photograph shows Rose gritting his teeth, finishing his swing and watching the ball travel towards left center field. San Diego Padres pitcher Eric Show can be seen falling off the mounds towards first base after delivering the pitch. Also visible are San Diego Padres catcher Bruce Bochy and home plate umpire Lee Weyer. A caption on the reverse provides a description events. The whole caption reads: "HISTORIC SWING-- A baseball record that seemed unassailable is finally broken as Peter Rose of the Cincinnati (Ohio) red watches his 4,192nd hit begin its flight towards the outfield. the 44-year-old Rose surpassed Ty Cobb's 57-year-old record for career hits, 4,191, during the game at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium against the San Diego (California) Padres. The legendary Cobb got his total hits in 11,429 times-at-bat from 1905 until 1928. Rose, who began his major league career in 1963, broke the record in 13,769 times-at-bat. A native of Cincinnati, he is currently player-manager of the baseball clubs. (Sept 11., 1985)."
