Marv Rackley photograph

Date1949 June 07
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Marv Rackley (left) standing with manager Burt Shotton (right) on the steps of the home dugout at Ebbets Field. Rackley is wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers home uniform while Shotton is wearing a collared shirt, dress pants, and a Brooklyn Dodgers cap. The photograph shows both men from the knee level up. Rackley stands with his right foot raised and resting on an unseen object (presumably the top step if the dugout). Rackley has his arms crossed, holding a baseball glove against his right knee with his right elbow. Rackley has his head turned to his left looking at something outside the boundaries of the photograph. Shotton stands with his left foot raised and resting on an unseen object while he rests his left arm across his left knee. In his left hand Shotton holds a pair of keys and an unidentified document. Shotton has his right arm draped across Rackley's shoulders. Shotton has his head turned to his right, looking at Rackley. A caption on the reverse of the image describes the circumstances for the photograph. The whole caption reads: "Pirates Complain of Sore Arm, So Dodgers Take Rackley Back: Marv Rackley, fleet-footed outfielder, is back with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Branch Rickey, club president, has returned Johnny Hopp and a bundle of cash to Pittsburgh in one of the most amazing the-customer-is-always right moves in the history of baseball deals. Returning an unsatisfactory player after a conditional tryout is not uncommon, but the switch around announced by Rickey just prior to the Dodgers-Cubs game yesterday at Ebbets Field has all the appearances of a story situation that turned out in Hollywood after an extra-tough night at the Brown Derby. It just doesn't make any sense, or perhaps it makes too much sense." The return of Rackley to the Dodgers occurred on June 7, 1949.
