Mel Ott with Group photograph

Dateprobably 1944
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel Ott captured sitting down and eating dinner with fellow baseball players and soldiers. Seated on the far side of the table in the foreground, from left to right, are Frankie Frisch, Mel Ott, Bucky Walters, and Dutch Leonard. Two unidentified men have their back to the photographer. Other unidentified gentlemen are seated at other tables in the background. A caption on the back of the photograph (not shown) states, "Luminaries of the baseball world visit U.S. soldiers near the front lines to put on a sports talk and answer questions. Just before...dinner with men of the 90th Infantry...to right: (around far side of...Frisch, New York, manager of the...Mel Ott, New Orleans, player-manager...Giants; Bucky Walters, N. Philadelphia...for Cincinnati Reds; Dutch Leonard...pitcher for Washington Senators;...St. Louis, Mo., sports writer for...Dispatch. 12/25/44." A newspaper clipping is attached to the back of the photograph and states, "Just three days ago Mel Ott, manager of baseball Giants, was on the European battlefront entertaining our doughboys. Yesterday afternoon he was back in New York, following a transatlantic trip by plane. Mel is shown talking with GIs of the 90th Infantry Division in a mess hall just behind the front lines. The picture on the right was taken this morning as he discussed Giants' plans with President Stoneham. Mel leaves today for New Orleans." Based on the caption, this photograph probably taken in 1944.
