Babe Ruth Art photograph

Date1950 December 21
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of men holding a Babe Ruth painting. The caption (not shown) reads "The children's village, of Dobbs Ferry, New York, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, both profited today (Dec. 21) in what might be termed as a 'Tinker to Evers to Chance' play, in the pre-sensation of a painting of Babe Ruth to the Hall of Fame, and checks totaling $10,000 for the benefit of the underprivileged youngsters at the children's village. The painting, by Harold Von Schmidt, of Westport, Conn., shows Babe Ruth autographing a baseball for a group of eager kids. The canvas was turned over by the Babe Ruth Foundation to William Zeckendorf, President of Webb & Knapp , Inc., and John W. Calbreath, President of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who in turn gave $5000 each to children's village, and then donated the painting to the Hall of Fame. Mr. Galbreath could not get to the presentation in time to see the donation of his check with Mr. Zeckendorf's. The event took place at the University Club in New York City. Photo show, left to right- B.A. Tompkins, Senior Vice President of the Bankers Trust Co., and Vice President of the Board of Directors of Children's VIllage; Frederic W. Ecker, President of the Board of Directors of Children's Village and Financial Vice President of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co, who accepted the $10,000 on behalf of the underprivileged boys; William Zeckendorf; Melvyn C. Lowenstein, Secretary of the Babe Ruth Foundation, and member of its Board of Directors, who turned over the painting in consideration of the Christmas gift; Will Wedge, representing the Baseball Hall of Fame; who accepted the painting from Mr. Zeckendorf; and J. Paul Crey II, Treasurer of the Babe Ruth Foundation."
