The caption (not shown) reads "Taken less than a month ago, this is the most recent picture of Babe Ruth, baseball's retired Sultan of Swat and one of the most colorful figures in the world of sports, who was taken from his home shortly after midnight last night in a private ambulance to a hospital, He was accompanied by his wife and daughter, who said later that he was taken to the hospital for a 'routine checkup.' Name of the institution was not divulged." According to the caption, this was taken in December 1941.
