Babe Ruth as Wrestling Referee photograph

Date1945 April 02
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth acting as a referee for a wrestling match. The caption (not shown) reads "Wrestling fans appeared satisfied with the job that George Herman Ruth did as a referee. The bout was between Manuel Cortez, 200-pound Mexican from Boston who lost the tussle in Straight Falls to Leo Numa, 220, of Seattle, Wash. Cortez was the Bambino's foil. He threatened to poke the Sultan of Swat, after the Babe disqualified him in the first fall. But the former ball player merely cocked his left, bellowed at Cortez and the latter let it go at that." Based on similar photographs, this was taken on April 2, 1945.
