Thornton Lee with Young Fan photograph
Date1942 March 03
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Thornton Lee kneeling alongside a young fan. Lee, wearing a long sleeve shirt underneath a Chicago White Sox Spring training uniform, kneels facing the camera, holding a baseball in his left hand. Positioning himself close to the ground, to be at the same height as the child, Lee kneels with his right knee on the ground while supporting a portion of his weight on his bent left knee that is elevated off the ground. Lee rests his right hand on his right thigh while resting his left elbow on the top of his left leg. Shown in profile, Lee turns his head to his right, in the direction of the young boy. In gripping the baseball with his left hand, with two fingers on top, Lee extends his arm across his chest in the direction of the child standing to his right. This boy, identified as Edward Busse, wears a pinstripe jumpsuit and sideways ball cap. In a similar position, he holds an apple in his right hand that he extends in the direction of Lee. Facing the camera, Busse looks downwards and to his right, at the ball held by Lee. The shadows on the face of each subject as well as those behind their figures indicate that this photograph was taken out of doors. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, is a caption that reads, "SOX PITCHER SWAPS BASEBALL FOR APPLE CHICAGO WHITE SOX PITCHER THORNTON LEE SWAPS A BASEBALL FOR AN APPLE IN A DEAL WITH A YOUNG FAN, EDWARD BUSSE, AT THE SOX SPRING TRAINING QUARTERS AT PASADENA, CALIF. LEE WAS ONE OF THE SOX' MAINSTAYS ON THE MOUND LAST YEAR, WINNING 21 GAMES AND LOSING 11. 3/3/4.." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, is the date, "MAR 5-1942," the probable publication date of this image.
