Tris Speaker Batting photograph
Date1953 May 29
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length photograph of Tris Speaker batting. Facing the camera, Speaker wears a dress shirt, pants, and shoes, as well as a suit jacket. Speaker, captured mid-swing, supports his weight on his bent right leg while his left leg, that is bent at the knee, extends backwards, off the ground. In gripping the bat, Speaker places right hand over left, holding the bat in front of his body waist height, while looking down to the ground. To the right of Speaker, shown in profile, is Cleveland manager Al López. López, wearing a dress shirt, pants, shoes, and tie adopts the characteristic catcher's position. López looks forward and down, at the oncoming ball. Visible in the background of the photograph is a group of young boys watching Speaker bat, and a scoreboard. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), a caption, typed in purple ink, reads, "MEMORIES, MEMORIES ! CLEVELAND, O.:- BASEBALL MEMORIES OF ANOTHER ERA ARE REVIVED ON CLEVELAND HEIGHTS DIAMOND DAY PROGRAM AS FAMED TRIS SPEAKER (LEFT) LINES ONE OF EARLY WYNN'S PITCHES INTO RIGHT FIELD. THE CATCHER IS MANAGER AL LOPEZ OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS. ENSHRINED AS A MEMBER OF THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME, SPEAKER WAS 1916 BATTING CHAMPION OF THE YEAR WITH THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, WITH A .386. 5/29/53." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in pink ink, is the date, "JUN 2-1953."
