DescriptionA black-and-white, head and shoulders photograph of Satchel Paige dressed in a Kansas City Monarchs uniform. Paige is looking beyond the camera. The image caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Negro Pitcher Joins Tribe. Leroy (Satchel) Paige (above), a righthander pitcher, and one of the best known players in Negro baseball, was signed by the Cleveland Indians, according to an announcement made in Cleveland, July 7. A native of Mobile, Ala., the slim pitcher has been with the Kansas City Monarchs for about six years. Tribe president Bill Veeck did not disclose the terms of Paige's contract."
