DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Connie Mack captured as he blows out the 80 candles placed on top of his birthday cake on February 5, 1943. He is dressed in a tuxedo. The cake is two tiers and features a baseball on top that has an American flag sticking out of it. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) (not shown) and states, "Philadelphia, Pa. - That grand old man of baseball, Connie Mack, huffs and puffs as he blows out the candles on a huge birthday cake during a testimonial dinner in his honor. There were 80 candles, one for each of his years. The dinner was held in Philadelphia at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel.2/6/43." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of an additional copy (not shown) and states, "Slug (Connie Mack) Nice Blowing For An Octogenarian Philadelphia, PA. . . Cornelius McGillicuddy, who is better known to Americans as Connie Mack, veteran president-manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, is shown blowing out his birthday cake at the belated celebration of his 80th anniversary in Philadelphia last night. Everybody who is anybody in the baseball world attended the tribute to the grand old man of the diamond. Connie was 80 on December 23, but refused to permit a celebration at that time owing to transportation difficulties." The creation date of this photograph is based on the included caption.
