DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Connie Mack captured as he sits on a bench with his arm around his young grandson, Connie Mack III, who sleeps on his shoulder. Mack III is dressed in the Philadelphia Athletics uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) (not shown) and states, "Grand Old Grandfather Connie Mack placed his arm around his tired batboy grandson, Connie Mack, Jr., then 12, back in 1943, as a blackout interrupted a night game between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. The grand old man of baseball died, Feb. 8 at 93 in the Germantown, Pa., home of his daughter. Connie, Jr., is son of Roy Mack." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of an additional copy (not shown) and states, "Philadelphia, June 24-Sandman Comes To A Baseball Dugout--Connie Mack, Jr. 12, bat boy for the Philadelphia Athletics, sleeps on his grandfather's shoulder during a 65-minute blackout that interrupted last night's game between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. Connie, Jr. is the son of Roy Mack, A's assistant manager.1943." Based on the newspaper clippings this photograph was taken on June 23, 1943. In both captions Mack's grandson is misidentified, he is Connie Mack III, the son of Roy Mack.
