A caption pasted to the reverse (not shown) reads, "The Macks Lose The Athletics Philadelphia:-Earle Mack, Jr., Grandson of Connie Mack (photo in background), sits disconsolately outside his father's office after hearing about the sale of the Philadelphia Athletics to a Kansas City group Nov. 4th. Chicago real estate man Arnold Johnson bought the American League franchise for Kansas City for three-million, 375-thousand dollars. When Earle Mack, Sr., announced the sale to newsmen, he was crying. 11/4/54." An additional caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Bitter End: Earle Mack Jr. bows his head dejectedly after hearing his father announce the sale of the As to Kansas City." The creation date of this photograph is based on the included caption.
