Letter from Ford Frick to Alexander Cleland
Date1938 June 14
DescriptionA typed letter from Ford Frick to Alexander Cleland, June 14, 1938. It is typed on National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs letterhead, which includes the address. The date is to the right and the recipient's name and address are on the left. Frick, president of the National League, writes that the Centennial of Baseball is a centennial of a game rather than individuals. It is a nation-wide centennial which centers around Cooperstown because the first baseball diamond in history was laid out. He also writes that there is no tendency on the part of organized baseball to give all the credit to Doubleday and overlook Cartwright and Chadwick. He also writes that the policy of the United States government is that only photographs of past presidents, generals, admirals, or other men high in government shall be used on stamps. A baseball stamp is a good idea but will need to be a picture of a baseball game or scene rather than an individual. It is signed "Ford Frick." The verso (not shown) is blank.
