Jimmie Foxx Taking Batting Practice photograph

Datebetween 1936 and 1941
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Jimmie Foxx taking batting practice. Foxx, shown in profile, wears a Boston Red Sox home uniform. Depicted in his follow through position, having just made contact with the ball, Foxx stands in a modified lunge. Supporting his weight between his bent, front left leg and his bent, back right leg, Foxx looks forward, following the trajectory of the ball. Placing right hand over left on the grip of the bat, Foxx holds the bat chest height in front of his body, perpendicular to the ground. The batting cage, seen behind the catcher, who adopts his characteristic position, indicates that this image was taken during practice, rather than in-game. A partially occupied Fenway Park can be seen in the background. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Foxx, this image was captured between 1936 and 1938, or during the 1940 or 1941 season. During 1939, Boston wore a patch celebrating baseball's centennial on the left sleeve of their jersey, and in 1942, Boston wore WW II 'Health' patches, both of these are missing from the uniform worn by Foxx.
