Fred Clarke Batting photograph

Date1925 or 1926
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Fred Clarke batting. Clarke, shown in profile, wears a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform. Captured mid-swing, Clarke stands with his feet apart and knees bent. Placing left hand over right on the grip of the bat, Clarke holds the bat chest height in front of his body, parallel to the ground. Clarke looks forward, in the direction of the oncoming ball. Taken on the field, a fellow player and a partially occupied stadium can be seen in the background. The close cropping indicates that this image was extracted from a larger, more complete photograph. Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in green ink, is the date, "FEB 13 1959." Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Clarke, this image was captured during 1925 or 1926. These two years, during which Clarke returned to Pittsburgh as assistant manager, the team wore two-color socks and patches with a stylized letter 'P' on the right and left sleeve of their jersey. The circle seen below the bat is not original to the photograph and is the image of a thumbtack that was present on the original.
