Fred Clarke Portrait photograph

Date1908 or 1909
DescriptionA black-and-white portrait photograph of Fred Clarke. Clarke, shown from the chest up, depicted in 3/4 profile, wears a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform. Clarke, posed for the photograph, with his left shoulder angled slightly away from the camera, looks forward to a point to the left of the camera. Several facial features, portions of Clarke's uniform, and sections of the background have all been enhanced to appear more legible upon publication. The markings along the upper border of the photograph are not original and are a series of notations to indicate where this image is to be cropped upon publication. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Clarke, this image was captured during 1908 or 1909. The cropped patch visible on the left sleeve of his jersey, featuring the letters "PBC," were only worn by Pittsburgh during these two years. Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, is the phrase, "USED SEP 26 1953 MAGAZINE." Therefore September 26, 1953 exists as the publication rather than creation date of this image.
