DescriptionA black-and-white, full length, photograph of John McGraw captured in profile as he stands in the dugout and looks out onto the baseball field with a look of concentration. McGraw is dressed in a suit. Unidentified New York Giants baseball players are visible sitting on the bench in the background. The baseball players are dressed in the New York Giants road uniform. A newspaper clipping affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) reads, "Little Napoleon Directing His Team This is the first of a series by Sid Mercer on the life of John J. McGraw, for over thirty years the most colorful figure in baseball. Mercer traveled with the Giants in the hey-day of McGraw's leadership and gives a close up character study of the departed Peerless Leader." Based on the baseball players' uniforms and McGraw's time with the New York Giants this photograph was taken between 1909 and 1910.
