John McGraw photograph
Datebetween 1917 and 1932
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of John McGraw captured as he looks off to the side. McGraw has a serious expression on his face. He is dressed in the New York Giants baseball cap and jacket. It is unclear whether he is wearing a home or road uniform underneath his Giants jacket as it is not visible. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) reads, "John J. McGraw resigned yesterday...manager of the New York Giants...William H. Terry, the club's first baseman, was appointed to succeed...Ill health was given as the reason for McGraw's retirement. The announcement fell upon the unsuspecting baseball world with all surprising suddenness of a high explosive shell. McGraw no longer manager of the Giants! Why? The words flashed to every corner of the United States and across oceans. McGraw, since coming to New York thirty years ago, has grown to be so much a part of the Giants...are synonymous..." A second newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) reads, "Baseball's 'Little Napoleon.'" A third newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) reads, "'heaviness of heart,' Supreme Court...Harry B. Frank dismissed yesterday a suit by a 'dyed-in-the-wool' Giant baseball fan to prevent the National League team...moving to San Francisco." Another newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) reads, "John McGraw (top) who led Giants to their...century and in early '20s." Based on McGraw's baseball cap and his time with the New York Giants this photograph was taken between 1917 and 1932.
