Mel Ott Batting photograph
Date1940 or 1941
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel Ott captured while at bat. Ott is looking over his right shoulder towards the pitcher's mound with a face of determination and has his right leg lifted off the ground. Ott is dressed in a New York Giants home uniform. An unidentified catcher is crouched down in a catching position behind Ott. An unidentified stadium, probably the Polo Grounds, is in the background and the seating is empty. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "Master Melvin...Breaking in at tender age of 16, Mel Ott went on to become one of Giants' greatest clouters. With 511 home runs lifetime, he holds the NL record. Mel also managed the Giants." Based on Ott's uniform and his time with the Giants, this photograph was taken in either 1940 or 1941.
