DescriptionA black-and-white sequence photograph of Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher, Sandy Koufax, captured as he winds up for a pitch and when he is relieved from a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 22, 1964 after injuring his arthritic elbow early on. The Dodgers went on to lose against the Cardinals 6-7. In the photograph on the left Koufax has his left arm raised high as he winds up and his two feet are planted far apart on the pitcher's mound. He has a strained expression on his face. In the second sequence on the right, are Walter Alston, Sandy Koufax and John Roseboro discussing relieving Koufax from the game early due to hurting his arm. Koufax is looking at Roseboro. Roseboro has his hands behind his back. Alston is visible in the 24 uniform. All three gentlemen are dressed in the Los Angeles Dodgers road uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph and states, "Dodgers ace pitcher Sandy Koufax (32) suffers an injured arm and was relieved after the 1st inning of Cards-Dodgers game here 4/22. Koufax was ordered home to Los Angeles for examination. Koufax shown pitching (R) in 1st was hit for 3 runs. Dodger manager Walter Alston (24) and catcher Johnny Roseboro come out to talk to Koufax who pitched out the inning." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "Sandy Koufax, Dodger ace, confers Walt Alston (24) and Johnny Roseboro after Sandy hurt priceless left arm in first inning at St. Louis last night." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on April 22, 1964.
