Bob Feller Sworn In photograph

Date1941 December 09
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Bob Feller being sworn in. Feller, center, is shown from the knees up, standing with his left arm by his side while raising his right hand. Mirroring the position of Lieutenant Commander Gene Tunney to his left, Feller appears to be reciting an oath. Feller is wearing a suit, tie, and pocket square. Feller directs his gaze at Tunney, making eye contact. Behind the group hangs the American flag. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a copy of this image as it appeared in a newspaper with the included caption that reads, "It's 'Bos'n Bob' Now! . . . Feller Joins Navy Bob Feller, 23, center, one of baseball's greatest pitchers, was sworn in yesterday as Naval Reserve chief boatswain's mate by Lieut. Comm. Gene Tunney, right, former world's heavyweight champ. At left is Lieut. David N. Goldenson, recruiting officer." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), on the newspaper clipping, in magenta ink, is the date DEC 11 1941, the probable publication date of this photo. A very similar image, BL-4482-68-31, is also available in the collection. Feller was sworn in on December 09, 1941.
