Bob Feller Posed Military Routine Dual photograph
Date1942 January
DescriptionA set of black-and-white posed dual photographs of Bob Feller demonstrating daily military tasks while wearing a training work uniform with a black visor cap. Visible on the front of the cap is the United States Navy insignia, in addition, the badges present on the sleeve of the right arm of his uniform denote Feller's rank and rating. During the Second World War the Seaman were the only branch to wear their rating badges on the right sleeve. The crossed set of anchors visible below the eagle indicate Feller's rating, a Boatswain's Mate. The two chevrons on the same badge represent his ranking, third grade, second class. In both images Feller's gaze is directed downwards, focused on the task he is completing, he does not make eye contact with the camera. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a clipping of the original newspaper caption that reads, "Bob Feller Le(...)n the Navy Former Cleveland fireball pitcher who is in training at Norfolk, VA., to become a physical instructor, is shown making up his berth, above, and caring for his rifle, below. Feller is a chief boatswain's mate." Stamped on the reverse (not shown) in red ink is the date, "JAN 12 1942," the probable publication date of this image. The stiff, posed nature of these photos in conjunction with the provided caption indicate that these photos were specifically taken for the media.
