Date1938 June 19
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack (left) with American League president Will Harridge. Harridge is presenting Mack with a book. The two are standing on a baseball field, in front of a large floral arrangement. The caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Cleveland, Ohio. Connie Mack, the best-loved man in baseball, was honored in Cleveland today when leaders of the national pastime gathered in the Municipal Stadium to pay him homage. The occasion marked the anniversary of the first professional baseball game in the United States which was played at Hoboken, N.J., June 19, 1846. Photo above shows President Will Harridge of the American League, presenting baseball's 75-year-old patriarch with a handsomely-bound leather book containing the signatures of every person in organized baseball from Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis down to the greenest rookie in the West Texas-New Mexico League." According to a label on the reverse, this photograph was taken on June 19, 1938.
