Satchel Paige Pitching photograph

Date1942 August 08
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Satchel Paige warming up before a game between the Kansas City Monarchs and the Cuban Stars. He is captured having just released his pitch. There are other players on the field and fans in the stands in the background. The image caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Great Colored Hurler. New York - Getting $2,000 for a single ball game is pitching for plenty of hay (and pay). That's the sum Leroy (Satchel) Paige gets for participating in the Kansas City Monarchs-New York Cuban Stars game played in Yankee Stadium. Lanky Leroy's team have won five straight Negro American Baseball Championships. Since baseball's Commissioner Landis declaration that the rules of the Major Leagues contained no provisions barring Negro players, Paige may be considered one of the most likely big league prospects if colored players are admitted to the major loops. This photo shows Satchel during pitching practice at the stadium.'' The image was taken on August 8, 1942.
