DescriptionGray wool uniform shirt with dark blue pinstripes and four white buttons down the front half placket. "Bobbies" is in light blue appliques across the front chest. Interior back of the neck has a manufacturer tag, "Marshall E. Smith & Bro." There was also a label beneath this tag which is now lost and frayed. Reverse of the shirt is blank.
Bio/Historical NotePhiladelphia Bobbies uniform jersey worn by Edith Houghton, a 10-year old girl who played shortstop for the Bobbies from 1922 to 1925, including a tour to Japan. Before World War II, women's barnstorming clubs like the Philadelphia Bobbies toured the country playing local men's teams. In 1922, 10-year-old Houghton joined the Bobbies as their starting shortstop. The Philadelphia Phillies later made her the majors' first female scout.
