Christy Mathewson World Tour sweater

Date1913-1914
DescriptionBlack wool sweater with maroon cuffs, neck, placket and pocket detailing. Nine mother-of-pearl round buttons run down the center of the placket. There are two pockets on the front. The neck is high with a maroon wool strap on the proper left side with a white button. There is a missing button on both the right and left side neck where this wool strap would attach to keep the neck closed. There is a maroon applique patch on the proper left sleeve and a slightly faded red, white and blue shield patch on the proper left chest. Sewn into the proper left back portion of the sweater is a rectangular fabric tag with very faded lettering, "C. Mathewson." Black tag at the neck is split but still legible, "AG Spalding & Bros."
Bio/Historical NoteSweater worn by New York Giants' Christy Mathewson for the 1913-1914 World Tour. The 1914 visit was part of an ambitious world tour organized by Charles Comiskey, the owner of the Chicago White Sox, and John McGraw, the manager of the New York Giants, which began in Cincinnati in October 1913, and continued on to Japan, China, Australia, British Ceylon, Egypt, Italy, France, and Great Britain. The White Sox and the Giants toured for five months, playing exhibition games against local teams and against each other.
