Hurd Family Nine shirt
Datebetween 1930 and 1950
DescriptionLight brown wool short-sleeved uniform shirt, size 38, with five buttons down the front placket. "Family / 9" is appliqued in black and orange across the front of the chest. On the proper left sleeve is "Hurd" in the same applique lettering, down from the shoulder. The back of the jersey says "Arlington / Mass." in the same lettering. The bottom proper right side of the placket has three staples in it that have rusted and discolored the wool. Two of the staples are attached to a length of ribbon or fabric tape. There is also an additional button hole next to these staples though no button or evidence of a button on the opposite placket. There are four reinforced holes in each armpit. Inside the collar are tags for "James E. Brine Inc." of Cambridge, MA and one for the size.
Bio/Historical NoteIn the 1930s, Herbert Hurd of Arlington, Massachusetts, created a baseball team starring himself and his eight sons: The Hurd Family Nine. During the Great Depression, similar family teams embarked on regional barnstorming tours as a welcome source of income. This shirt was worn by one of the members of the team, but it is not known which.
