Johnny Evers, Frank Chance, and Joe Tinker Portrait photograph
Date1946 April 24
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of three portraits of each Johnny Evers, Frank Chance, and Joe Tinker. Evers, left, shown from the neck up, wears a Chicago Cubs jersey and baseball cap. He looks forward to the camera, establishing eye contact. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Evers, this image was taken between 1905 and 1908, the only years during which Evers played that Chicago wore solid black caps and jerseys with full collars. A similar copy of this portrait exists as BL-1480-68-16. Chance, center, shown from the chest up, wears a Chicago Cubs road uniform. Depicted in profile, Chance looks forward to a point in the distance and to the right of the camera. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Chance, this image was taken in 1909 or 1910, the only two years Chicago wore pinstripe uniforms with "cadet"-style collars. A similar copy of this portrait exists as BL-1467-68-4. Tinkers, right, wears a Chicago Cubs jersey and baseball cap. Shown from the neck up, he looks forward to the camera, establishing eye contact. Based on research, this image was captured in 1908. A similar copy of this portrait exists as BL-2236-80. The backgrounds in each portrait have been modified. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) are several newspaper clippings that read, "Tinker, Evers, Chance Among 11 Named to Baseball Hall of Fame," "Joe Tinker," Frank Chance," "Johnny Evers." Stamped on the reverse (not shown) in red ink, is the date, "APR 24 1946," a possible publication date of this image.
