Tris Speaker Resting photograph
Date1915 October 01
DescriptionA black-and-white 3/4 profile full-length photograph of Tris Speaker resting on two baseball bats. Shown wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform, Speaker turns his head to his right to establish eye contact with the camera. Crouched in a catcher's position, Speaker supports his weight on two bats. Speaker, in this position, sits on the two bats that are held by his clasped hands while comfortably resting his elbows on each corresponding knee. Due to the included foreground it appears as if photograph was captured on a baseball field. The immediate foreground as well as the background are out of focus, creating a spotlight effect within the image itself that further highlights the subject. Portions of the background behind Speaker have been blacked-out and are not original to the image. This area exists as a modification made to the original image for publication. Stamped on the reverse (not shown), three times, in purple ink is, "RETURN TO RECORD ROOM ART DEPT. N Y WORLD," information indication the publication source of this image. Handwritten on the reverse (not shown), in black colored pencil is "1st Pub Eve Oct. 9/15," "2nd Pub Eve Oct 7/16," "3rd Pub mom. 10/3/20," records of each publication date of this image. Stamped also on the reverse (not shown) in black ink is, "4th PUB. EVE. 5/18/23," another of the multiple publication dates of this image.
