Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby photograph

Date1947 February 22
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length photograph of Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby standing, posed for the photograph, in Cleveland Indians spring training uniforms. Speaker, pictured far left, stands facing the camera, with feet apart, holding a baseball bat in his right hand that is extended down by his side. Speaker holds the knob of the bat, while resting his right hand against his thigh. In doing so, the end cap touches the ground, allowing for the bat to lean against Speaker's right leg. Speaker smiles, looking to a point to the left of the camera. Hornsby, shown in profile, adopts a similar pose. In his front left hand, that is extended down by his side, Hornsby grips the knob of the bat, while the end cap rests on the ground besides him. The bat leans against his front left leg. Hornsby with his head turned slight to his left, looks forward, to a point to the left of the camera. Bleachers are visible in the background, indicating that both men stand on a baseball field. The quantity of available seating and the lack of advertisements on the interior wall of the field demonstrate that this photograph was not captured in a large, professional baseball stadium. Portions of the jerseys worn by both men as well as their facial features have been modified to appear more legible upon publication. The background surrounding both men has also been whitewashed and is not original to the image. The perpendicular lines framing both players, as well as the series of notations that resemble the letter 'K,' serve as a method to indicate where the photograph will be cropped. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a newspaper clipping of the published image with a caption that reads, "BASEBALL IMMORTALS . . . Tris Speaker (left) and Rogers Hornsby, in their day two of the games greatest stars pose for the camera man while directing the training work of Cleveland Indians at Tucson, Arizona." On the reverse (not shown), stamped on the newspaper clipping in red ink is the phrase "3 JOURNAL-AMER FEB 22 1947."
