Mary Frances Speaker Portrait photograph

Date1925 January 01
DescriptionA black-and-white 3/4 profile posed portrait photograph of Mary Frances Speaker. Speaker, wife of center fielder Tris Speaker, is shown from the neck up, with her head turned over her left shoulder, looking at a point in the distance to the left of the camera. The close cropping and the irregular edges of this image indicate that it was extracted from a larger, more complete photograph. Speaker's facial features as well as hair have been enhanced to appear more legible upon publication. The original background of the photograph has been eliminated through this editing process. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink is a caption that reads, "TRIS SPEAKER SHOWS OLD SPEED, GETS LICENSE, WEDS AND IS OFF ON HONEYMOON IN HALF HOUR DISPLAYING ALL THE SPEED HE HAS EVER SHOWN ON THE DIAMOND, TRIS SPEAKER, FAMOUS PLAYER OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, GOT A LICENSE, WED MISS MARY FRANCES CUDAHY (ABOVE) OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, AND STARTED ON THE HONEYMOON WITHIN HALF AN HOUR ON THURSDAY, JAN. 15. THEY WERE WED IN PARISH HOUSE OF ST. JOHN'S CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL, CLEVELAND, BY MGR. JOSEPH SMITH, VICAR GENERAL OF THE CLEVELAND DIOCESE. BRIDE AND GROOM WILL SPEND TWO WEEKS AT LAKELAND, FLA., THE INDIANS' TRAINING CITY AND THEN GO TO VISIT TRIS' MOTHER AT HUBBARD CITY (...) THE WEDDING WAS WITHOUT WARNING (...) ALMOST SECRET." Based on the provided caption, this photograph was published specifically in conjunction with Speaker's wedding announcement, therefore the included date exists as the publication rather than the creation date of this image. A similar photo provides a caption reading, "P & A PHOTOS (PHOTO SHOWS MRS. TR(...) FORMER MISS MARY FRANCES (...) (...)EVELAND, O) TRIS SPEAKER SHOWS (...) LICENS(...) WEDS AND IS O(...) HALF HO(...)." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "JAN 23 1925."
