Tris Speaker Throwing photograph

Date1925 May 22
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length photograph of Tris Speaker throwing. Speaker, facing the camera, wears a Cleveland Indians road uniform. Supporting his weight on his left leg, Speaker twists his upper-body to his left, leaning over his supporting leg. Having just thrown the ball, Speaker's bent, right leg is extended out to the side, just off the ground. Speaker, wearing a glove on his right hand, extends both arms downwards, on either side of his left leg. Speaker turns his head to his left and directs his gaze to a point in the distance and to the left of the camera, following the ball he has just thrown. Taken on-field, a partially occupied stadium can be seen in the background. The handwritten phrase, and the line and arrow drawn on the surface of the photograph, seen in the bottom left corner of the image, are not original and indicate where it is to be cropped upon publication. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, is a caption that reads, "Tris Speaker, Starting 17TH YEAR, IS CAREFUL OF HIS LEGS Tris Speaker, veteran Cleveland American team leader, who is starting his 17th year in the major leagues, a truly heroic record. His eye for batting and fielding is just as true as ever, but his legs are going back on him a little. Tris claims that the majority of big league players drop out early is because they do not exercise during the off-season periods, a thing which he has done religiously, notably long walking." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "MAY 22 1925."
