DescriptionA black-and-white candid photograph of Tris Speaker. Speaker, shown from the chest up, depicted in profile, wears a suit and tie. Smiling, Speaker looks down and to a point to the right of the camera. Based on the included background and the flat lighting this image was most probably captured indoors. A caption (not shown) pasted on the reverse, typed in purple ink, reads, "'GREY EAGLE" RECUPERATING AFTER OPERATION CLEVELAND, O.-- TRIS SPEAKER THE "GREY EAGLE" OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS CHAMPIONSHIP BALL CLUB IN 1920 IS REPORTED IN FAIR CONDITION AFTER OPERATION IN CLEVELAND HOSPITAL. SPEAKER, SHOWN ABOVE IN RECENT (...) BEFORE ILLNESS, IS LISTED AS ONE OF ALL (...) -TONY OF (...)BALL." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the phrase, "RECEIVED JUL 15 1942."
