Tris Speaker Bunting photograph

Date1924 or 1925
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Tris Speaker bunting. Speaker, facing the camera, wears a Cleveland Indians road uniform. Standing with feet apart, and knees bent, Speaker looks to his right, at the oncoming ball. Placing his left hand over his right on the barrel of the bat, leaning forward, Speaker holds the bat waist height, in front of his body. Captured in-game, an occupied stadium can be seen in the background. Visible in the lower center of the photograph, handwritten in black, is the word, "Speaker." Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Speaker, this image was captured during the 1924 or 1925 season, the two years during which Speaker played that Cleveland wore solid colored road uniforms with piping along the entire length of the jersey. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), on the other copy of this photograph, is a caption, typed in purple ink, that reads, "SPEAKER DEAD HUBBARD, TEXAS: MAJOR LEAGUE ALL-TIME GREAT TRIS SPEAKER, SHOWN HERE IN HIS PLAYING HEYDAY WITH THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, DIED DEC. 8 WHILE VISITING FRIENDS IN HUBBARD. APPARENTLY OF A HEART ATTACK. THE 70-YEAR-OLD HALL OF FAMER, KNOWN AS THE "GREY EAGLE" OF THE BOSTON RED SOX, BEFORE BEING TRADED--AT HIS PEAK--TO THE INDIANS IN 1916, WAS REGARDED AS BASEBALL'S GREATEST DEFENSIVE CENTER FIELDER. HE HAD A LIFETIME BATTING MARK OF .344 12/8/58." Stamped on the reverse (not shown) of this photograph in red ink, is the date, "FEB 18 1959."
