Tris Speaker photograph
Date1928
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Tris Speaker in uniform. Speaker, shown from the chest up, wears a Philadelphia Athletics uniform. Looking forward, facing the camera, Speaker establishes eye contact. The series of orange lines visible on the surface of the photograph are not original and indicate where the photograph is to be cropped upon publication. The letter "C" on the cap of Speaker exists as a further modification made for publication. A caption, typed in black ink, in the bottom center of the photograph, reads, "\TRISTRAM SPEAKER." Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a newspaper clipping of a portion of the published article that accompanied this photograph. It reads, "Tris Speaker, 70 Dies; A Baseball Immortal Tris Speaker's career- Page 20. WHITNEY, Tex., Dec. 8 - Tris Speaker, rated by many experts as the best centerfielder in the history of baseball, died today, apparently after a heart attack. The famed "Gray Eagle" was seventy. Burt Howell, a friend, said Speaker, former Cleveland In-dians' player and a member of Baseball's Hall of Fame, died at his lodge at near - by Lake Whitney. Speaker collapsed after a fishing trip as he and Charles Vaughn, a friend, of Hubbard, Tex., pulled their boat into the dock after an afternoon on Lake Whitney. Speaker was born in Hubbard, April 4, 1888. Speaker, who compiled a lifetime batting average of .345 in twenty-two season of play in the majors with the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland, Washing-ton and Philadelphia Athletics, had one previous heart attack. In July of 1954, he was ad-mitted to a Cleveland Hospital after a heart attack. Only last August he again entered a Cleveland Hospital for observa-tion as a precautionary meas-ure. He had been experiencing pains in his arms. At the time, he was a scout for the Indians, whom he managed from 1919 to 1926. Re-cently he was again a scout for the Cleveland club." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "DEC 9 1958." Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Speaker this photograph was captured during the 1928 season, the sole year Speaker played for Philadelphia.
