DescriptionA black-and-white full-length posed portrait photograph of Tris Speaker and Connie Mack standing on a baseball field, shaking hands. Speaker, pictured right, wears a bow tie, suit jacket, breeches and wingtip oxford shoes. Speaker, standing with feet apart, extends his right hand waist height to shake Mack's right hand. With hat in hand, Speaker holds his left arm behind his back. Smiling, Speaker looks to the camera establishing eye contact during this embrace. Speaker, shown in 3/4 profile angles his body slightly to his right, in towards Mack. Similarly, Mack turns in to his right, towards Speaker. Mack, left, shown wearing a three piece suit, tie, and dark dress shoes, raises his right hand to shake Speakers' right hand. Looking forward to a point to the right of the camera, Mack also stands with his left arm behind his back. The heavy shadows present on the faces of the subjects as well as the equipment in the included background indicates that this photograph was taken out of doors on a baseball field. In the background behind Speaker's right shoulder, a player, who looks at both men shaking hands, is visible. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, is a caption that reads, "First photos to arrive from Philadelphia Athletics Training camp at Fort Myers, Fla., of Tris Speaker, who recently signed. Tris did not wait to change his clothes but went directly to ball park where he received a warm welcome. Photo shows Connie Mack and Tris Speaker. alm 3-4-28." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date "MAR 14 1928," the probable publication date of this image.
