DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Connie Mack, right, as he meets with some of his pitchers and catchers during spring training prior to the start of the 1941 baseball season. Mack has a serious expression on his face and is holding a baseball out. Philadelphia Athletics baseball players, who are dressed in the Athletics road uniformed, look intently at Mack. They are, from left to right, Herman Besse, Carl Miles, Lester McCrabb, and John Babich. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) (not shown) and states, "Philadelphia Athletics Batteries Training Carlsbad, Calif. -- Under the supervision of Connie Mack, manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, the pitching and catching staffs yesterday donned uniforms and started spring training for the coming baseball season. Photo shows L-R pitchers, Herman Besse, Carl Miles, Lester McCrabb, and John Babich with manager Connie Mack as they started spring training yesterday. 2/13/41" Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on February 12, 1941.
