Grover Cleveland Alexander Pitching photograph

Datebetween 1926 and 1929
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Grover Cleveland Alexander pitching. Facing the camera, Alexander wears a St. Louis Cardinals road uniform. Having just pitched the ball, Alexander stands on his left leg, while his bent right leg is lifted off the ground. His gloved left hand rests down by his side, he holds his right arm across his body chest height. Alexander looks forward to a point in the distance and to the left of the camera. Taken on the mound, an occupied stadium is visible in the background. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Alexander, this image was captured between 1926 and 1929, with the exception of 1927. A caption pasted on the reverse (not shown) reads, "ALEXANDER THE GREAT . . .Of all the wonderful performances turned in by Grover Cleveland Alexander, among baseball's all-time great pitchers, none stands out so vividly as the World Series feat of 1926 when Alexander the Great went in as relief pitcher in the 9th inning of the crucial game. The bases were loaded with Yankee runners. Tony Lazzeri, a hard hitter, was at bat when Grover Cleveland Alexander ambled to the mound, apparently ob-livious of the pandemonium of shrieking fans and calmly struck out the batter, winning th[e seri]es for the Cards."
