A caption pasted on the reverse (not shown) reads,"OL' PETE ALEXANDER HOSPITALIZED GROVER CLEVELAND (OL' PETE) ALEXANDER, ONE OF BASEBALL'S ALL-TIME GREAT PITCHERS, READS HIS MAIL IN A WARD AT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY GENERAL HOSPITAL, DEC. 26. HE WAS FOUND UNCONSCIOUS IN AN ALLEY BEHIND HIS HOLLYWOOD APARTMENT HOUSE TWO DAYS BEFORE. ALEXANDER, 62, IS A CANCER VICTIM, DOCTORS REPORTED. HIS RIGHT EAR WAS AMPUTATED TWO YEARS AGO IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THE DISEASE HIS CONDITION WAS REPORTED AS FAIR. 12/28/49."
