Tris Speaker and Lefty Grove photograph
Datecirca 1937
DescriptionA black-and-white 3/4 length photograph of Tris Speaker and Lefty Grove, seated in a dugout, mid-conversation. Speaker, right, wearing dress pants, a suit coat, bow tie, and pocket square, sits on a dugout bench facing the camera. Speaker leans to his right, in the direction of Grove, supporting a portion of his weight on his right hand, that grips the side of the bench. While turning his head to right his to look at Grove, Speaker's left arm rests on the bench, down by his side. Grove, left, sits on the same bench with his right leg crossed over his left. Grove sits with his left arm resting on his right thigh with his right arm extending across his body gesturing in Speaker's direction. Wearing glasses and a Philadelphia Athletics home uniform, Grove turns his head to his right, in the direction of Speaker. The cropped figures present in the photograph indicate that Grove and Speaker were not alone in the dugout when this image was captured. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, is a caption that reads, "Speaker, Tris (The Gray Eagle, Spoke) With the A's, the seventh player elected to the HOF, Speaker's plaque there is inscribed "greatest centerfield of his day." Baseball, HOF, Speaker, Tris (3790)#1693-FD." Based on the included caption this photograph was published in conjunction with Speaker's election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. Therefore, this date exists as the publication rather than the creation date of the image.
