DescriptionA black-and-white 1/2 length posed photograph of Tris Speaker sitting in an armchair, talking on the phone. Speaker, shown from the waist up, depicted in 3/4 profile, wears a bathrobe. Seated in an armchair, with his left arm resting on the arm of the chair, Speaker holds the phone up to his ear with his right hand. Speaker looks forward, to a point to the left of the camera while talking. A cast can be seen on Speaker's left wrist. A scar on the right side of Speaker's mouth is now visible after his accident. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, is a caption that reads, "TRIS SPEAKER RECOVERING CLEVELAND MAY 14.--TRIS SPEAKER, FORMER MANAGER OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, WAS ABLE TO SIT UP AND TELEPHONE A FRIEND TODAY. HE HAS BEEN CONFINED TO A HOSPITAL SINCE SUFFERING A FRACTURED SKILL AND OTHER INJURIES IN A FALL LAST MONTH IN HIS HOME. HE PLANNED TO LEAVE THE HOSPITAL WITHIN A FEW DAYS. 5-15-37." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, is the phrase, "RECEIVED MAY 14 1937." Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, on the other copy of this photograph, is a caption that reads, "TRIS SPEAKER ON THE MEND CLEVELAND, O., MAY 14--TRIS SPEAKER, FAMED BASEBALL OUTFIELDER, WHO SEVERAL YEARS AGO LED THE CLEVELAND INDIANS TO THEIR FIRST--AND ONLY--WORLD'S CHAMPION-SHIP, WAS ABLE TO SIT UP YESTERDAY AND PLANNED TO LEAVE THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE HAS BEEN CONVALESCING FROM 16-FOOT FALL WHICH FRACTURED HIS SKULL. SOME OF HE SCARS FROM THE ACCIDENT MAY BE SEEN ON SPEAKER'S FACE AS HE TELEPHONES TO A FRIEND/ 5-14-47."
