Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young photograph

Datebetween 1920 October 05 and October 12
DescriptionA black-and-white 3/4 portrait of Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young standing posed for a photograph. Lajoie, posed far left, wears a suit, tie, and fedora. Facing the camera, Lajoie stands with feet apart, arms resting down by his sides. Holding a cigar in his right hand and a rolled-up program in his left, Lajoie softly smiles, directing his gaze to the left of the camera. Speaker, standing between Lajoie and Young, wears a Cleveland Indians World Series uniform. Facing the camera, with hands on hips, holding a baseball glove in his right hand, Speaker smiles, looking to the right of the camera. Young, standing far right, wears a three-piece suit, tie, pocket watch, and homburg hat. Standing with feet apart, Young angles his body slightly to this right away from camera. Young, looking at a point to the left of the camera, stands with his right arm resting down by his side and his left hand in his pants pocket. Evident by the occupied stadium in the background this photograph was taken either just before or after a game within which Speaker played. Based on the black armband present on the uniform worn by Speaker, and the specific design of the uniform worn by Speaker, this image dates from the World Championship series of October 1920. The uniform addition of the black armband was introduced at the end of the 1920 season and worn in memory of shortstop Ray Chapman who passed away at the beginning of August. Created specifically for the 1920 World Series, the Cleveland uniform worn by Speaker adopts the same logo design as the home uniform but lacks pinstripes.
