Petroskey, left, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, wears a suit, tie, and a Hall of Fame pin on his lapel. While standing, holding waist height in his left hand, the cleats and helmet worn by Gwynn when he earned his 3,000th hit. Petroskey looks forward and down to his right. Gwynn, right, wearing a San Diego Padres alternate uniform, stands partially behind a lectern with the San Diego Padres team name and alternate 'swinging friar' logo on the front. Placing his left hand on the grip of the bat, Gwynn holds the bat, that he used to break this record, waist height, angled diagonally across his chest. Leaning slightly slightly forward, Gwynn extends his right hand across Petroskey, in the direction of Jeff Idelson, Vice President of Communications and Education at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, who is standing just out of frame, to the left of Petroskey. Behind this group several people sitting in the infield are visible. An occupied stadium can also be seen in the distance. Based on the nature of this ceremony, this image was taken after August 6, 1999, the day Gwynn completed his 3,000th hit.
